# Google Sheets – Sum, Average, Min & Max

In this article of Google Sheets – Sum Average Minimum & Maximum, we will discuss how to find sum and average from a given set of data, and we will also show you how to find the smallest and the largest number from the same set of data.

By the end of this tutorial, you shall be aware of how to find sum and average from a given set of data in a Google Sheet.

### Sum Average Minimum & Maximum Tutorial

To follow along with me make sure you have a copy of this file. Click Here to obtain the copy of Google Spreadsheet Practice file. once you click the link it will open in the view-only mode from there click on File, then select make a copy from the menu, this will bring a dialogue to copy the document. Click on OK. This shall launch the same file in editable mode and will make a copy of this file on your Google drive. Now you can begin to follow along with me with the same set of data.

### Google Sheets – SUM function

Let us begin, I place my cursor on the 10th cell (as shown in the video) start by entering “=” sign followed with sum function. Based on the data Google is giving me a suggestion, should we do the sum of cells D2 to D9 (SUM D2: D9)? I am confident that I need that function to perform the sum of cells D2 to D9 (SUM D2: D9). However, for this time, I will select the function manually using my mouse click. When I click on that SUM function, notice Google is giving me a tooltip about this function. It displays the syntax of the SUM function. See the image below for reference.

Even before I hit the “Enter” key, notice there is the result shown in the tooltip. This is the result that I get if I press the “Enter” key now. See the image below for reference.

``=SUM(D2:D9)``

### Google Sheets – Average function

To find the average from the same set of data, we place the cursor in the cell D11. Start by typing in “=Average” and select the function from the list by clicking on the Average function using your mouse. You may click on the “?” icon to view the syntax, example and a summary of the “Average” function. See image below for reference.

You have the option to minimize this function or close this function. We are going to close it for now. We shall then select the numbers from the cell D2 to D9. These are the numbers I need average for. You may then close the bracket and press the “Enter” key on your keyboard. You now have the result for the average.

``=AVERAGE(D2:D9)``

### Google Sheets – Minimum function

To find the smallest number from any given set of data in Google spreadsheets we shall use the MIN function. We shall start by typing in “=MIN” that’s the function we need to find the smallest number. I will click on the function from the list using my mouse and select the data from where I need to find the smallest number.

``=MIN(D2:D9)``

### Google Sheets – Maximum function

To find the largest number we use the function Max. We shall start by typing in “=” sign and before even we touch the key on my keyboard, Google starts a suggestion based on the approach with the data so far. Its asking us, shall we find the max from the same set of data. That is what we really need. We shall simply press enter on the keyboard. Google now completes that function for us. We shall now press enter one more time to execute the MAX function. We now have the largest number from that series.

``=MAX(D2:D9)``

Only if it was already something you were planning on, no need to pivot the content engines for me 🙂 I do find that some our non technical staff struggle with the concept of “ifs” and the formulas associated.
